Lots of people in one space, but I wouldn't have missed the "Sing It Yourself" Congress for the world!

Re: Great Night Saturday
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 10:51 AMOh yeah, that "Sing It Yourself" Congress of Vienna was incredible! I was secretly hoping that the technical problems with the sound would continue and Richard Powers would just announce that the next song was going to be a fast waltz and would everyone please sing the lyrics to "Piano Man." :)
I would say that the Friday Night Waltz dances on the second Saturday in Oakland are off to a pretty good start. -

Tue, January 16, 2007 - 9:02 PMGlad it worked. I was completely wiped from a wedding I attended earlier that day, but at least I was able to get a dancing fix at the reception.
Maybe next one...

Re: Great Night Saturday
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 1:56 PMI agree, that was a fun night! It is also soooo convenient for me...way more so than the Alameda or PA waltzes. Suspect there are other Berkeley or Oakland folks who feel the same. I hope everyone keeps coming--I was excited to see how good the attendace was!
I wonder what the record time is for teaching a whole group BHP starting from polka basics...two hours seems to be cutting it pretty close for most teachers. -

Tue, January 30, 2007 - 4:36 PMAre there other Oakland, Berkeley or SF Waltz classes and dances? I love the Friday night event, but the trip to Palo Alto takes a steely eyed committment.
Thanks! -

Re: Great Night Saturday
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 10:33 AMThere's also Allegro in Emeryville where I've been going, and another place in Oakland called Just Dance Ballroom ( they just opened). There's Blues dancing in S.F. on Friday, and Swing in S.F. on Thursday. There's a place called The Metradome (sp?) in S.F. as well for Ballroom dancers. -

Re: Great Night Saturday
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 4:09 PMThe Metronome is for those who do American Ballroom (like you see on DanceSport). They don't do a lot of the vintage stuff we do at FNW, PEERS, or Gaskell's -

Re: Great Night Saturday
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 3:43 PMAlso swing, salsa, and argentine tango. And a bit of ballet. But as you said, no vintage dances.

Re: Great Night Saturday
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 12:28 PMI do understand other places tend towards American/international Ballroom and did forget to say that FNW and Gaskells (vintage ballroom) places etc., that circuit, (which can actually be quite big) are the only ones that do the rotary waltzing. At Allegro etc. the American/international Ballroom Waltz is very different, lovely to dance all the same though. It just depends on your interest and what you wish to learn. To me dance is dance and love learning everything as long as my pocket book can afford it and continue to feel challenged. Do you have a preference Elyse? -

Re: Great Night Saturday
Fri, February 2, 2007 - 12:29 AMThanks for the info. I'm new to this, so although I knew FNW was different from other venues, I would not have been able to say how. I guess I'll need to go out and experience different styles. I've done a lot of Lindy Hop in the past ,which although energetic, tends to stay in one place. What I am most enjoying about Waltz is the wonderful feeling of traveling through space along the line of dance.
